The Ndebele tribe is part of the Nguni ethnic group of South Africa.  Ndebele women traditionally adorned themselves with a variety of ornaments that symbolized her status in society. In earlier times, the Ndebele wife would wear copper and brass rings around her arms, legs and neck, symbolizing her bond and faithfulness to her husband. The rings, called Idzila, were believed to have strong ritual powers and would only be removed after her husband's death. This piece is a modern day interpretation of the Idzila and it has become a popular accessory in South African contemporary fashion.
